Guest Post from: A Night Owl

Please enjoy this Guest Post from Kimberly over at a Night Owl. I have come to love her blog and I hope you get the chance to head over there and give her a peak as well! She always had some very awesome Thrifty Crafts!

Hi! I’m Kimberly from A Night Owl, a blog about the evening antics of a working mom! In my “spare time” I enjoy crafting, photography, thrifting, parties or a quick and easy recipe and have really enjoyed sharing this aspect of my life with others through my blog! I love to connect with new friends and would love for you to come by A Night Owl and introduce yourself!

I’m so thankful that Leah has asked me to share an “upcycle” project with you! Every week I share a “Thrifty Thursday” post of something that I’ve found at our local Goodwill that I have “upcycled” into something fabulous and usable in our home, and today it’s a chalkboard serving tray. I picked up this cute little silver tray from my local Goodwill a couple of months ago. It had quite a bit of wear, but at just $2, I couldn’t pass it up! I had bigger things in mind for it…

So a few weeks ago I finally got around to fixing her up! I cleaned the tray, used frog tape to tape off the inset of the tray, then taped newspapers to the outside to protect the edges.

Then just a couple coats of chalkboard spray paint and voila! A perfectly cute little chalkboard tray that looks adorable in our kitchen!

Now since I just painted the tray this afternoon, I still need to give it 24 hours to dry before using chalk on it. However, I can see something like a menu or cute saying in its future…

Easy Mummy Candy Holders

This craft is perfect for those of you with little to no craft stuff in the house. The only supplies you really need to worry about is googly eyes and Elmer’s glue. This craft reuses empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls!

Materials:

  • Paper Towel: (bounty or viva works best with no decorations on the sheet)
  • Googly Eyes
  • Empty Paper Towel roll or Empty Toilet Paper roll ( you can use newspaper too but you’ll need white paint)
  • Elmer’s Glue
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Scissors
  • coffee filters

Directions:

  1. Take the empty paper towel roll and cut it into smaller sizes for the mummies head.
  2. Then glue the filter to on of the open sides of the roll using the left over filter to bunch up for the start of the mummies face.
  3. Cut the paper towel into strips.
  4. Mix 1 part glue 3 parts water in a bowl for a mache type mixture.
  5. Dip the cute paper towel strips in the glue mix then wrap around the roll until you have created a mummy.
  6. Stick on the googly eyes while wet and then let dry.
  7. Fill with candy and use as party favors or just fun decorations.

*You can always just use gauze and glue on the googly eyes. I just did not want to waste our first aide supplies.*

Hope you enjoy! Happy Crafting!

A New Way to Re-Use and Old Creamer Bottle

Having a 4 year old at home is very interesting and fun. My little man love to help, he lives for it in fact! What he loves more than helping is being independent. I have had to get creative to accommodate his ever increasing desire to do-it-himself.

Recently, he has been wanting to pour his own milk for his cereal. I have always told him, “not today” because  that would mean half the gallon spilled. Until, one morning I was pouring my creamer into my coffee and realized the answer to this morning cereal dilemma was right in my hand.

Once I had used all the Creamer in the container I cleaned it, tore off the label and wrote the word “MILK” in permanent marker.  The small bottle was perfect, the top was easy to list yet once closed properly was spill proof and the lip built inside the cap made it perfect for pouring little amounts or larger amounts! Now I am sure it you own a Kraffe that you might be able to use that, however, I do not own one and if I did it would more than likely be made of glass.

This container is great because I can use it a few times the recycle it and use a new one!

And now my little man is happier than ever because he can finally make his own cereal and pour his own glass of milk.

As he would say it was, “Easy Peasy Mac and Cheesy” and now we are both happy!

Fun Uses for Food Jars and Coffee Cans!

Piggy Banks made from Pickle Jars and Coffee Cans!
or make
Candy Holders, Crayon holders, Lego Containers and more!
Simply Clean and save your empty cans, or jars and then let the magic begin!!

This is my jar I made for myself!
My son had a blast making his to match his Space Themed room!! Jars will need a strong cutter to get a slit at the top if you want one, but I just leave them with no hole.
The plastic containers and Oatmeal containers are PERFECT if you want a hole at the top because they are easier to cut. The paint will look different depending on what container you use, the plastic works best with permanent marker and the paper oatmeal containers are great for little ones because you can use crayons or paint.

You can even gather items like shells, pictures, pom poms and more to hot glue/tacky glue to the container.

Smaller Salsa Jars make GREAT crayon holders you can paint them, put a paper around it to decorate or leave it like I did so it’s easy to see your crayons.
Or what about a treat jar? this Old Salsa Jar is what I use I haven’t even bothered to decorate it but, it helps me limit the amount of Candy the kids keep around the house, if it does not fit in the jar then it does not stay. (I do have a small hidden collection from Easter leftovers to refill but typically if it does not fit it goes)
The funny thing is you would think since they see it all day they would be asking for candy all the time but it’s quite the opposite :) They never ask!!
The possibilities for these Containers are endless, Vases for Flowers, Toy canisters, etc.
This is one of my 8 year old’s Lego Cans, from a Coffee Tin from Costco!!
Well I hope you enjoyed this, let me know what you Save and reuse at home!!
