Trade in Your Toxic Air Freshener

Many store-bought air fresheners contain toxic chemicals, spreading them throughout your home every time you use them.

You’ve probably used these products for years, and may be thinking to yourself that you’ve yet to experience any side effects. But did you know that prolonged use can cause serious health problems which you may never attribute to your commercial air fresheners?

A study conducted by the University of Washington in 2010 found that out of the 25 commonly used scented products they tested, there were an average of 17 chemicals emitted from each one. There were 133 total chemicals identified throughout the entire testing process and approximately 25 percent are considered hazardous or toxic. Surprisingly, only one was listed on the product label. What about the other 132 chemical compounds that you are unknowingly discharging into the air?

The sad thing is that manufacturers of these types of air freshening scented products (as well as personal care products, cleaning supplies and laundry products) are not required to disclose what goes into making them!

Here are just a few of the toxic chemical in your commercial air fresheners:

Phenols – Phenols are made from crude oil through a series of manufacturing processes. Phenols can be inhaled and are readily absorbed through the skin. They have been linked to skin irritations, wheezing, coughing, upset stomach, kidney and liver damage. Some suspect they may be a contributor to autism in children as well.

Formaldehyde – In its basic form, formaldehyde is a colorless gas. It’s used in a variety of products because it is a good binding agent and cheap to manufacture. Formaldehyde can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled and has been linked to sleeplessness, fatigue, headache, breathing difficulties, nausea, diarrhea and bronchitis, to name a few.

Phthalates – These endocrine disruptors interfere with the natural hormone processes of the body. Phthalates are linked to reproductive damage, birth defects, developmental disabilities and cancer.

Needless to say, these products are better left unused. An alternative to using these damaging products is creating your own “green” air freshener from a just a few ingredients.

The items you will need to create a basic homemade air freshening spray are:

  • A 16 oz. clean spray bottle
  • Warm water
  • Essential oil(s)

Fill the spray bottle with water leaving approximately 1 inch from the top. Then use 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oils (adjust amount to your liking) and shake for 30 seconds. Be sure to shake before each use.

Essential oils can be purchased at whole foods, or online. I like to use Amazon for everything. I found a great Sampler set for $32 that is a steal. I recommend the following scents and always Tea Tree oil which has so many purposes as they all do.

Kitchen Makeover

I had the fabulous opportunity to work with Benjamin Moore Aura Paints recently! I painted my boring white kitchen a great vibrant color and I am LOVING IT!!

So here’s the skinny on Aura Paints! Aura Paint is a A Green Promise product, so you know it is safe for you and your family! Aura paints also include:

    • Color Lock® technology for exceptional color and no color rub-off
    • Never more than two coats needed in any color (exactly two coats was what I used)
    • Easy application with seamless touch-ups
    • Mildew resistant
    • Washable–perfect for kids, kitchen and more!
    • Paint and primer together—saving you time!
    • Finishes include matte, eggshell, satin and semi-gloss

I did not have to use a ton of paint either two nice thin coats and I was done, I still have plenty left over for later use and touch up’s! :)

We had a hard time choosing the color as you can see there were so many colors to pick from.

Finally it came down to Buttered Yam and Salsa Dancing

Salsa Dancing Won! :) Let me just tell you this color defiantly makes me feel like dancing !

Before I reveal the great pictures let me let you in on a little secret! If your looking for easy clean up with the paint here’s what you do:

Grab some Glad press and seal and stick it to your paint pan….add your paint and when your done peal it off in one piece so as to keep the pain inside the press and seal!

Your clean up is super easy this way, now all you have to worry about is cleaning  the brushes!

Now for the big reveal….. Are you ready? Be sure to let me know what you think!

What I love most about this color is that is changes thoughout the day! So now it’s like I have a different color all day long! I love that!

DIY Salt and Sugar Scrubs- Guest Post

Today’s Guest Post Is perfect for Holiday DIY Gifts! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! I would like to Thank Adrianne for sharing this post! Please make sure and visit her blog for other great ideas!

Hello Savy Green Saver readers! I’m Adrianne, and I blog over at Happy Hour Projects, where I focus on DIY-projects that are quick and easy.  You’ll find a little bit of everything: jewelry, sewing, recipes, general crafts and beauty solutions – like the one I’m going to show you today!

At one time, my sister was a rep for a beauty company (that shall remain nameless).  I used to let her sell me an obscene amount of products.  I love supporting my family but I wasn’t sad when she quit!  I did, however, LOVE a certain foot scrub. ;) But when my last tube ran out, I started looking into DIY-options instead to save myself some money.

I started looking into homemade sugar scrub recipes.  After checking out a bunch of them, I found that a lot of people had really similar recipes.  That makes sense – it’s nice to put your own spin on it.  I didn’t make them all.  In fact, I didn’t make any of the recipes I found.  I looked at the base recipe, and discovered that they all had this base recipe in common:

2 parts sugar : 1 part oil.

Yep.  That’s it.  2 ingredients.  And that is easy.  I have that in my kitchen all the time!  By using organic ingredients, you can also make this an organic beauty solution.

I made it up with coconut oil, and I absolutely LOVE it for exfoliating my feet.  You could also use olive oil or another kind of oil, though keep in mind that if your oil isn’t white or clear, it will affect the color of your scrub.  If you’re going to use coconut oil like I did, you will want to melt it first.  At 77 degrees, coconut oil is liquid.  But below that, it solidifies.

Looks pretty gross, right?  LOL.  30-45 second in the microwave on low power should do the trick, or heat it in a saucepan for a few minutes.  You don’t want it boiling or anything – just warm enough to melt.

Since I was replacing my previous foot scrub (which was a heavenly peppermint scent), I added some peppermint essential oils to my recipe – about a dozen drops per each cup of sugar.  You can find essential oils at craft stores where they sell their soap supplies.  I picked some up when I started making homemade bath salts - and a little goes a long way.  But investing in a $7 bottle (less, if you bring a coupon) was STILL less than I was spending on one tube of foot scrub before, though!

If you don’t want to spend the money on essential oils, or just want to use what you have in your kitchen, some other ideas to try are: a bit of vanilla extract, orange or lemon zest, cinnamon, finely ground coffee – whatever you like the scent of! Adding ingredients won’t change it much, it just makes it smell nice.  If you plan to use the scrub on your face or body you may want to opt for something that is not peppermint.  Peppermint opens your pores (that’s why it feels cold when you use it) and that can be a bit harsh when you’re not using it on calloused feet.

One thing I will note: if you don’t think you will be using this quickly, or you plan to give it as a gift, you should add some vitamin E oil, which is a natural preservative.  You can buy Vitamin E capsules at pretty much any drugstore – just poke a hole in it with a pin and squirt the oil out.  I’d use 2 capsules for each cup of scrub.  Vitamin E oil is also available in bottles.  You can just add a couple teaspoons if you opt to buy it that way.

Homemade sugar scrubs and bath salts make for great, inexpensive gifts – especially as a set.  I found these great jars that fit a little over a cup of scrub at Hobby Lobby.  I love the stainless steel lids.

Because I planned to give these as a gift, I thought they needed something more – you could add a label you print off from your printer, or tie on a cute tag – the packaging gives it a great touch, and it should be your own spin on it!  I went for the simple look, and used my Silhouette machine to cut vinyl labels. :)

(If you’d like to get the bath salt recipe – visit my post here.  It’s just as easy and economical.)

This is a great idea for homemade Christmas gifts, hostess gifts, or even a little pick-me-up for a stressed friend.  I hope you all enjoyed this idea, and I’d love to see you over at Happy Hour Projects anytime!

Thanks for having me over, Leah!

Easy Mummy Candy Holders

This craft is perfect for those of you with little to no craft stuff in the house. The only supplies you really need to worry about is googly eyes and Elmer’s glue. This craft reuses empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls!

Materials:

  • Paper Towel: (bounty or viva works best with no decorations on the sheet)
  • Googly Eyes
  • Empty Paper Towel roll or Empty Toilet Paper roll ( you can use newspaper too but you’ll need white paint)
  • Elmer’s Glue
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Scissors
  • coffee filters

Directions:

  1. Take the empty paper towel roll and cut it into smaller sizes for the mummies head.
  2. Then glue the filter to on of the open sides of the roll using the left over filter to bunch up for the start of the mummies face.
  3. Cut the paper towel into strips.
  4. Mix 1 part glue 3 parts water in a bowl for a mache type mixture.
  5. Dip the cute paper towel strips in the glue mix then wrap around the roll until you have created a mummy.
  6. Stick on the googly eyes while wet and then let dry.
  7. Fill with candy and use as party favors or just fun decorations.

*You can always just use gauze and glue on the googly eyes. I just did not want to waste our first aide supplies.*

Hope you enjoy! Happy Crafting!
