Save Time and Work Less Tip #6

If a space is not working for you — re-organize it!

Do you always have one corner of certain rooms that’s piled with mess – your “problem area”?  I know I certainly do (actually a couple , yikes) It may surprise you to learn that most people put up with these mini-nemeses for years too long.

If a corner of your house is continually in chaos, your “space” isn’t working for you.  Put your thinking cap on and come up with a solution you feel will work.  For example, if everyone uses the foyer table as a dumping-ground for car keys, gloves, receipts, etc, put a nice-looking basket on the table and insist they deposit stuff there; or install hooks for car or house keys beside the door.

Great Key racks that also hold your mail available on HERE on Amazon

And if shoes are always cluttering up in a dirty pile at the back door, buy tiered shoe racks or shoe bags, like these here both available HERE on Amazon

PopChips and a Free Movie II

As you are aware I had the wonderful opportunity recently to attend a Free Movie with my kids and enjoy/try some great PopChips! The movie we attended was Hotel for Dogs in Down Town West Palm Beach and as luck would have it not only did we watch Hotel For Dogs on our blankets eating Katy’s Kettle Corn PopChips but we were visited by a group of dogs from our local animal shelter(Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League)! It was an absolute treat to share our movie with these wonderful adoptable pooches.!

PopChips even gave me a great loot bag with Katy perry Hair, eye lashes, a T-shirt, a  Target Gift Card and of course all the POPCHIPS we could eat! They sure are fun to munch on,, the kids loved them I liked them. They are a rice cake meets potato chip meets popcorn type of snack and well worth the try. PopChips some in a few other flavors like BBQ but I must say if your a fan of Kettle Corn then you’ll be a fan of these. Look for them next time your out at your local Target!

I cannot wait for the next movie because this was sure fun, and I loved seeing the dogs watching a doggie movie! One of the pups that I would have loved to take home just found a home recently too! I was very excited to hear that!

Meet Molly formerly known as Mona Lisa as you may guess why! She was a doll and I feel in love with her, Thankfully she found a home after this great PopChips Sponsored Event!

Be sure to check out PopChips on Facebook and Twitter!

Cookin’ With Hayley- Leek and Potato Soup

Hey there Wonderful Fans and Readers, please give a fantastic welcome to Hayley who is the FIRST official contributor to SavyGreenSaver! Make sure you stick around because I think she’s going to provide us with some fabulous yummy recipes! Without further adieu, may I present the first ever, original post series,

COOKIN’ WITH HAYLEY

Hi ya’ll!!! I’m Hayley and I blog over at Hayley’s World. I’m so excited to be over here sharing recipes with you! We are trying to move towards and all clean/paleo lifestyle. For now, almost 100% of our dinners are clean/paleo. Soon we will be incorporating more breakfast meals and then lunch meals into our plan.

This is one of my fave recipes is this Leek and Potato Soup. It’s not the most appetizing as far as looks but it’s tastes amazing! I didn’t know if I would like leeks because I’m not really an onion-y person and it’s part of the onion family. But they are yummy!
And the good thing is there are no real measurement. Want it more potato-y, add more potatos. More leek-y…well you know….add more leeks. ;)

What you’ll need:
Bacon (2-3 slices, I use turkey bacon)
Small red potatoes (I’ll normally grab around 8)
A couple cloves of garlic (more or less to tastes)
Fresh rosemary
Oil (olive, coconut, etc)
Leeks (how many will depend on their size…small ones I would say about 4-5, big ones 2)
Onion (I only use 1/2-1 in mine, but again adjust to taste)
Broth (chicken or vegetable, I made my own, which I’ll have coming up as one of my posts here)
Salt and Pepper
Cream
Instructions:
Cook bacon in pan until crispy. Set aside to cook and then dice.
Wash and dice potatoes and place on a baking sheet. Mince garlic and a few springs of rosemary. Sprinkle a little olive oil (or melted coconut oil) over the potatoes, add garlic and rosemary and roast on 350 for about 45 minutes.

Slice leek in half longways then slice thin (about 1/4 will do) and dice onion. Put the leeks in a bowl of cold water and swish it around a bit. The dirt will settle to the bottom and you can pull out the cleaned leeks from top as they float.

Saute leeks and onions in pan until translucent. Add a little S&P (salt and pepper).

Once they are translucent add the roasted potatoes, diced bacon and add about 6 cups of broth. Simmer for a few minutes.

At this point you need to blend the mixture. If you have an immersion blender that’s great. If not, you can spoon some into a blender and puree. Then add some more until it’s all pureed. Add back to pan if you do that. Then add a little cream. 1/4 to 1/2 cup. If it’s too thick add some more broth. I usually end up using about 8 cups total.

Serve with a good crusty bread (make sure to dip the bread too!!).
I hope you all enjoy the recipe! I look forward to sharing more with you all!
If you’d like to print the recipe without the pictures you can go HERE and download it.
Thank you Hayley for this great soup recipe! I will definitely have to try it out it looks delicious! Please make sure and let Hayley know below what you think of her beautiful pictures and recipe!

Save Time and Work Less Tip #5

Cook for twice as many – and freeze.

Cook twice the volume of casseroles and soups than you would normally need for your family.  It may take a few hours of your time on a Saturday or Sunday but if you plan it out right, shopping, prep, and cooking for a whole week can be done in 4hours. 1 hr to shop or less as long as you stick to your list and 3 hours to prep/cook and again you can multitask cooking here as well.

If you can handle really large batches, that’s great; but a lot of women report that too large a batch is “too tiring”, causing them to abandon the “cook and freeze” plan.  However, if you cook for twice as much as you need and freeze half the results, you’ll find yourself with a good turnover rate:  You’ll stockpile dishes in the freezer – but they won’t hang around in there too long.

The best thing about cooking ahead, it’s NOT from a box!  Who has not said, “oh I’ll just whip this up” (grabbing the first frozen, packaged meal they see) in order to save time OR “let’s just eat out”, causing your refrigerated goods to become that much closer to expiration date. Additionally, your not just saving time, your lowering your waste, improving your consumption of what you actually buy and saving cash!!

You DO The Math:

Cooking More in Bulk (as your family needs) – a bit more of a weekend day cooking

=

Saving $$$, lower food waste and gained TIME!

Have you prepared freezer meals or precooked for a week, what major mistakes did you make as you learned to do this? How much time do you think you saved yourself during the week?

Looking for cook books to get you started on freezer meals? Check out the list I put together below from Amazon available for download on your Kindle or hard copies can be ordered!
